Report Errors
This study aims to identify the meanings of discourse analysis in relation with cultural studies. While semiotic approaches have shown the weakness of dealing discourse as social practice, discourse analysis has been trying to make connections with cultural studies focusing on its social characteristics. Evaluating these studies, this study also raises methodological and theoretical issues for further research.
Methodologically I examine three approaches, sociolinguistic approach, speech act theory and text analysis, and try to raise issues for further study. First, I argue sociolinguistic approach should be expand to deal utterance as not only representation of social group but also the core containing power relation among social groups. Second, speech act theory, as a study on utterance and context should be redirect to analyse a social situation in which utterance and social context interplays. Third, though text analysis has been used as a method of ideology critique or analysis of narrative form, this study suggests to expand it to analyzing textual transformation which content emerges into a certain form.
In theoretical issues, consenting the perspective of critical discourse analysis(CDA), I argues that the concept of practice should be treated as a symbolic struggle in a strong sense, where as the concept constructive as restricted in relation with social situation.
