The study aims to scrutinize various types of ceramics and their relations with the tombs by analyzing representative ceramics from the last excavations.
The historical materials like the Goryo-sa contain information on various kinds of funerals and tombs, and describe how they were regulated among different groups of people. The tombs mostly belong to the middle class and higher, since the commons and slaves could not afford to have them back then.
The excavated ceramics from the tombs in the Goryo dynasty are mostly celadon, including a few white porcelains, earthenware, and Chinese ceramics. Statistically speaking, the most frequently excavated kinds are bowls, plates, bottles, and bronze spoons, which literally reveals the life style of Goryo.
Early in the Goryo dynasty, there lied the ceramics for drinking tea in the tombs, while household items (or Chinese white porcelains for upper class) replaced them in the middle of the dynasty. In the later period, a handful of household items replaced them all, reflecting the changeable mode of the era.
The quality and kinds of ceramics from the excavations relate to how closely the kilns are located, which indicates the fact that production and consumption usually get affected by the geographical distance (the closer, the better). For people from upper class, however, luxurious ware and even Chinese ceramics were included, irrespective of distance.
For people from low class officials and the commons, items varied according to their financial situations.
