The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of aerobic exercise and red ginseng supplementation on hormone of female elders. For this purpose, thirty six female elders (age: 78.86±4.75 yrs) were randomly assigned to six different groups of six subjects per each(a group of walking exercise and red ginseng supplementation, a group of red ginseng supplementation alone, a group of walking exercise alone, a group of walking exercise with placebo supplementation, a group of placebo supplementation alone, and a group of control) and walking exercise was performed for aerobic exercise. Walking exercise had been performed three times a week up to 14 weeks, four times a week from 15 to 16 weeks. In each walking exercise, duration was 60~70 min and exercise intensity was 40~60% HRmax that consumed 120~180 kcal. The capsules of red ginseng powder from ginseng roots, cultivated for six years, manufactured by KT&G Public Co. and placebo capsules (300㎎ per each) were supplied to subjects, and they had three capsules per each time and three times a day right after meals. Blood analyses for hormone were performed at Green Cross Co., Korea. Data analyses were performed using paired t-test for checking the changes within groups and one-way repeated measured ANOVA for post-hoc. The correlation coefficient was also performed. At that time, the statistical significance was p<.05. Analysis results in hormone of subjects after the sixteen-week program are summarized in the following.
1) After the sixteen-week program, HGH was significantly increased in the groups of walking exercise with red ginseng supplementation, walk exercise with placebo supplementation, and walking exercise alone, but it was significantly decreased in the control group. Estrogen was significantly decreased in the group of placebo supplementation alone.
2) After the sixteen-week program, cortisol was significantly increased in the walking exercise with red ginseng supplementation but it was decreased in the control group. Epinephrine was significantly increased in the groups of walking exercise with red ginseng supplementation and walk exercise.
3) After the sixteen-week program, estrogen in the group of walking exercise with red ginseng supplementation was significantly different from that in all other groups.
4) After the sixteen-week program, HGH had positive correlation with estrogen, and estrogen had positive correlation with epinephrine.
