The purpose of this study in a broad sense is that, as many highly-trained human resources who want to work abroad in the Taekwondo sector are being produced and, at same time, the demand on those highly-qualified experts is on the rise at abroad, I want to help those going overseas by providing some insight of what foreign Taekwondo performers want and how much knowledge, abilities, and pre-perceptions about Taekwondo they have, without which, I think, they aren't able to teach Taekwondo effectively.
On conclusion, I'd like to advise as follow:
Firstly. foreign Taekwondo performers resident in Korea usually don't stay long in Korea. So not many of them are black belt holders. This means, when we teach them, we have to get information about how long each of them will stay here and arrange rational training timetables, which will be the best way to promote Taekwondo as a Korean culture among them.
Secondly, considering the way they came to know Taekwondo by chance, face-to-face communication played the largest role, which means we need to advertise and promote Taekwondo more strategically than before. In addition, the academic approach of the marketing strategy is necessary as well.
Thirdly, while foreign Taekwondo performers resident in Korea favor patterns the most, those non-residents in korea prefer the self-defence the best. As we know, patterns are rather static and are usually for the sake of cultivating mentality, while self-defence is for protecting themselves. Probably, this resulted from the fact that, in foreign countries, coping with security problems are one of the priorities. Therefore, when we go overseas, we need to be fully trained in self-defence techniques.
Fourthly, foreign Taekwondo performers resident in Korea positively estimate that Taekwondo is favorable to the tourism industry of Korea. Rather than aimlessly pursuing to train foreigners, we have to develop something in Taekwondo to show foreigners and should let them know we have this kind of a great martial art. We can create some Taekwondo shows mingled with some esthetic values, apart from martial techniques. By doing this, Taekwondoists can naturally broaden their landscape, I think.
