The goal of this study is to utilize images of intercollegiate athletes as a theoretical veritable. To do so, this study first looks at what constitutes intercollegiate athletes' images. The study also pays attention to how the degree of involvement with sports affects the way audiences view intercollegiate athletes' images.
For this study, some descriptive adjectives were collected through open-ended questions. Others were selected from the Trait Descriptive Adjectives developed by psychologist, some of which are thought to be appropriate to describe sports players. In total, 52 adjectives were collected and made into a survey.
According to the survey responses, images of intercollegiate athletes are composed by six categories: manliness, competitiveness, powerfulness, game-running ability, studentship, confidence. In short, these six categories and subsequent factors in each category explain 51.22% of how intercollegiate athletes' images are evaluated.
This study looks at how the degree of involvement with or interest in sports affect how they evaluate intercollegiate athletes' images. Except for powerfulness, the more interested audiences are in sports, the higher they evaluate intercollegiate athletes' images in each category. Statistically, this is because highly-involved audiences actively go to or watch games or use sports-related cultural products. By doing so, they have more chances of having either direct or indirect contact with the intercollegiate athletes, and thus they are more likely to evaluate those intercollegiate athletes positively.
