The purpose of this study was to examine whether there were any differences in mental health between non-obese children and obese children and to determine the relationship of mental health to general characteristics. The subjects in this study were 86 children with normal weight and 84 obese children, who were selected from among the fifth and sixth graders in five elementary schools in Yeongweol-gun.
The instrument used in this study to measure mental health was a multiphasic personality inventory that MMPI(Minnesota Mutiphasic Personality Inventory) was restandardized by the Clinical Psychology Academy(1993) to fit into our country. For data analysis, average and standard deviation were calculated and t-test was conducted to find out the difference in mental health between the mormal-weight group and the obesity group. SPSS WIN V10.0 was utilized.
The findings of this study were as below:
1. When the two groups were compared, there appeared no significant gap in all the five factors, including depression, polymenorrhea, introversion, obsessive compulsive symptom and hysteria. Therefore, obesity didn't give any impact on mental health(p>.05).
2. Concerning the correlational relationship between mental health and general characteristics, obesity had nothing to do with mental health (p>.05), although the general characteristics had significant correlation to each of the mental health items.
The above-mentioned findings suggest that obesity had no influence on mental health, but it seems necessary to do sustained research in the future since there might be different results if other subjects or other instruments are selected.
