This study examines the theoretical aspects of the music philosophy in the later period of Chosun(朝鮮) dynasty. Instead of introducing all the issues in detail, I will summarize what I have discovered from my study.
It has been generally held that much of the music philosophy of the later period of Chosun dynasty relied largely upon the music philosophy of Confucius. We do not see much evidence that there were any serious efforts to establish and theorize their independent music theory for Chosun. Thus, it may be not too amiss to suggest that people in this period were more concerned with practice than theorizing in terms of the philosophy of music.
Additionally, between the early and the later periods of Chosen dynasty, there was a shift in emphasis in the philosophy of music, from a music theory based on the concept of man derived from a theory called, Sungni Haak(性理學), a study of the relation between the intrinsic disposition of man and the fundamentals of music, to a theory called Chungi Ron(天機論), which tends to emphasize the musical expression which is natural and inartificial.
This paper is a part of my bigger research project that will include and explore the following topics:
1. The music arrangement of Lyrics song(kagok, 歌曲).
2. the philosophy of music, the concept of time, the epistemology of the universe of those wandering musicians of the later period of Chosun dynasty.
3. The idea of Jeongak(正樂), Sungjung Ron(性情論), Cungi Ron(天機論).
This study may be an initial effort to theoretically probe and systemize the Jeongak(正樂) tradition that is one of the most frequently used terms in the discussion of Korean traditional music.
