Qian Hong-Shu(錢弘?, 928-988) is the last king of Kingdom of Wuyue(吳越國), China and a very famous patron of Buddhism. In this paper, I have researched on the family line and life of Qian Hong-Shu and examined on his Buddhist sarira worship. He is the grand son of Qian Liu(錢?), the founder of Kingdom of Wuyue. In 978, Qian Hong-Shu pledged allegiance to the Northern Song Dynasty and Wuyue was absorbed into the Song Dynasty.
Though all of his family members supported Buddhism and Qian Hong-Shu was the most avid believer in Buddhism. He made small eighty-four thousand stupas to enshrine the scripts of Arvatath?gat?dhi??h?na-h?daya-guhya-dh?tu-kara??a-mudr?-n?ma -dh?ra?? sutra(一切如來秘密全身舍利寶?印?羅尼經). This dh?ra?? sutra is a kind of Dharma Relic. Such a deposit of Dharma Relic into a pagoda of his offering is a new buddhist relic ritual in China. The cult of Dharma Relic was flourished in Korea and in India of that time, so this might be transmitted to China from those countries in the reign of Qian Hong-Shu.
He also made new buddhist stupa-like reliquaries, which have four scene of buddhist Jataka and horse's ear shaped decorations. This type of reliquaries is known as the imitation of so-called A?okan stupa of Mao-xian(?縣). In China this type was flourished in the south region of Chang Jiang(長江) from Song to Ming Dynasty. However this new type stupa was transmitted to Japan and to Korea.
