The modernization of Korea has the dual aspect. One is the planned modern subject characterized by ‘finding individual’, the other is the harsh experience of colonial domination. Women in colonized Korea had never been assimilated by both way of life and remained ‘the Others’.
This study focused on the life of women in colonial age in the middle of the huge tide of social transition through the life stories of old woman whose gender is a male. This Kim Young-Ja’s stories shows the life of woman in the margin status, East vs West, Woman vs Man, Urban vs countryside dichotomy and conflict between Modern and Tradition in the contradictory structure.
In this story, teller judged other women’s life with traditional criteria, but with the story goes on, expressed changed attitude to her woman sexuality.
Though even in present, the idea of patriarchism still rule and characterize the woman sexuality and almost all of them internalize their sexuality in this measure.
When we think of the origin of Modernization stressing on the man sexuality, the woman’s life stories has the important point and possibility of self-awareness taking her away from the fetters of man, family and society and building self-confidence as an individual in the time of transition between tradition and modern.
