The Songs of Korean Shamanism, Muga, exist in the form of performance literature. In this article, we have examined the process of 씻김굿 Muga and its characteristics, keeping thought to the actual circumstances and true nature of shaman's songs.
The performance space of 씻김굿 reflect the formation of 굿(rite) and its progress. Spatial movement, unfolding from the “inside of the building to the yard and to the outside of the gate” is relevant to the secularism that separates the dead from the alive’s dwelling, protects and maintains the life of the alive.
Shaman, musicians, and audience work as the basic component of the 씻김굿 performance. In particular, the combination aspect of 당골(shaman) and musicians is the constituent that multilateralizes the performance process. The union of the two engenders various aspects, thus, embodying the performance’s characteristics.
씻김굿 performance is performed intricately in the scene of 굿. Such features of Muga can be understood by the analysis of performance process. “story composition” method of conveyance “accompaniment and rhythm composing method” “behavioral manifestation" are the elements to understand the process of Muga performance.
According to the results of research, it is known that “story composition” method of conveyance “accompaniment and rhythm composing method” “behavioral manifestation” have a close relation to the theme of the work.
By examining the performance method, we can classify the characteristics of 씻김굿 Muga into two categories that is, organic union such as linguistic and behavioral manifestation and the emphasis on musical expressions. This plainly shows the real facts of 씻김굿 Muga and distinguishes 씻김굿 Muga from Muga from other regions.
