The purpose of this study is to investigate the settlement process of a memorial service that was held at the grave since the 17th century, and the roles of the head family in the process, through the case of the Yun Seon-do family of the Hae"nam Yun clan.
In Joseon, a memorial service held at the grave was established as an annual ancestral rite for distant ancestors to whom the offering sacrifice was to be over after four generations. The families of the Hae"nam Yun clan have kept old documents that contain the descendants" discussions about the procedures of a memorial service that would be held at the grave site, and about the financial resources which were needed for the task. The documents help us estimate how the noble families performed memorial services at the graves, and what kind of meaning such memorial services had for them.
The memorial service held at the grave by the Yun family had the following characteristics:
First, the descendants raised funds for the ceremony and established assets for a memorial service at the grave(ancestral rites of other families had financial resources passed down from ancestors). Second, there was a trend for the eldest grandson of the main family to actively propose the financing and management of assets for a grave memorial service(the duties were inherited to the eldest son). Finally, certain groups such as the main family tended to take a leading role in performing grave memorial services. Building of financial resources for such services became necessary, as its participants expanded to include distant descendants with the passage of time.
This "grave memorial service" was inherited by the main family since its foundation by Yun Seon-do. Later, the descendants formed a Mun"gye Aid among themselves with each of the following generation carrying out the "Che"cheon" obligation. Such service functioned to promote the gathering of descendants rather than merely commemorating the ancestors after their death, as the descendants performed such service by voluntarily getting the required financial resources. The roles of the main family as the focal point to lead all the activities were also highlighted in the process.
