Emission standards are becoming more stringent and it is very hard to reach the standards without the use of exhaust after-treatment systems such as SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). DPF has already applied to vehicles and it is reported that proper DPF system shows PM (Particulate Matter) reduction rate of 90%. On the other hand, SCR is gradually becoming one of the best after-treatment systems to reduce NOx. Among SCR systems, urea-SCR system is known as the most stable and efficient solution to problem of NOx emission. However, the conditions of injection spray on urea-SCR are crucial for aqueous urea solution to be atomized and diffused into the exhaust pipe well, because characteristic of urea spray can significantly affect the reaction to NOx. This work aims to assess the injection system of aqueous urea solution using a commercial fuel pump. This study observes viscosity of aqueous urea solution at various temperature. Moreover, this work assesses the performance of a fuel pump. The urea injection system using the commercial fuel pump shows that injection conditions for optimal atomization are at the temperature 60℃ and the pressure 6bar. In addition, numerical simulation demonstrates the possibility that aqueous urea solution can sufficiently diffuse into the exhaust pipe by this system.
