Recently, the countdown signal was introduced to enhance the pedestrian environment of crosswalks. However, research is still insufficient as to how comfortable and safe it is compared to existing signals as well as the most suitable location for installment. This study observes pedestrian time and behavior changes according to the introduction of the pedestrian countdown signal, and has put effort into quantitatively measuring the qualitative indexes such as comfortableness and safety based on these distribution patterns. It has also compared the crossing behavior from a legal and safety perspective before and after the installation of the pedestrian countdown signal. Data analysis was mainly conducted by graphs and technical statistical analysis of the distribution of pedestrian walking-time. The statistical significance of the extent of change of pedestrian moving time on the graph was analysed through a paired t-test, a before-after study on pedestrian crossing patterns and χ²-tests of both groups. Results from the application of the proposed analysis of the study showed that on introduction of the countdown signal, pedestrians will cross more amiably and comfortably than before. In terms of safety, it will realistically reduce the number of pedestrians liable to accidents on he crosswalks thereby being effective for safety. This study presents an empirical framework and may be utilized as fundamental data for research on pedestrian behavior according to the installation of the countdown signal. However, further comprehensive behavioral research is necessary based on survey data of future land use characteristics and service levels according to the number of pedestrians, pedestrian density, and pedestrian crossing density on crossing.
