This paper will be a first effort to find out the meaning of the relationship between a tree and a human in our history without any past researching papers concerning with the thought of tree’s worship and the planting of trees. The records of trees are coming out poetics, literatures and paintings, etc. in the history which are not only the Chronicles of the Three states(三國史記), the Heritage of the Three states(三國遺事) and the Kyoryo history(高麗史), but also the Chosun dynasty and the recent and present ages. The purpose of this paper is researched how to be cultivated and to be protected in our living histories. The method of this research is looking for the meaning and the symbolization of a tree to classify and to analyze into the collecting records of the Chronicles of the Three states(三國史記), the Heritage of the Three states(三國遺事), the Kyoryo history(高麗史) and the true king’s record of the Chosun dynasty. One of the landscape architectural researching fields may be also made to look out the species and the symbolization of a tree in the wall paintings of an ancient tomb, the paintings and the old maps. The tree on the altar(神檀樹) is the central tree, and the symbolizing tree with the religious and the community characters in the article of the old Chosun dynasty, the Heritage of the Three states. This phenomenon is looking after the tree of a shrine(堂木) with various species locally in a traditional village. This central tree has a religious symbol with the introducing Buddhism as a wisdom tree(知識樹) or the two pairs of sal trees that surrounded Buddha’s deathbed(裟羅雙樹) as well as a bo tree(菩堤樹) in the Three states. A shrine with a tree has performed a sacrifice as one method of receiving a divine revelation and has been an aiding supplement in a geographical Feng Sui and the thoughts of Do Cham(圖讖思想), the ancient Korean state. This phenomenon was derived from ‘To be pregnant a child under the tree on the altar’ in the article of the old Chosun dynasty, the Heritage of the Three states. The altar of a ginkgo tree of Confucius is a sacred place and a teaching place of Confucianism in the Chosun dynasty. A ginkgo tree as well as a pine tree and an oriental arborvitae is deeply related with a national and local school annexed to the confucian shrine(成均館ㆍ鄕校) and a bookseller's(書館). A tree species can be chosen for the character and the function of the place according to the Classical Canon to be respected in Confucian scholars. The directional color joining with the thoughts of five elements of the Chinese cosmology can be make a match with a blue color in the willow tree(楡ㆍ柳), an red color in the ginkgo tree(杏) and the chinese date tree(棗), an yellow color in a mulberry tree(桑ㆍ?), an white color in an oak tree(炸ㆍ楢), an black color in a chinese scholar tree(槐ㆍ檀).
