This Study aims to evaluate the spatial development policies in the unified Germany and to define its implications for Korea. The federal government of Germany has suggested the new national development policies planned for sound development of the former German Democratic Republic(GDR). Despite massive financial support from the former Federal Republic of Germany(FRG) to GDR, the gab between the former GDR and FRG in terms of economic strength and spatial development remains wide. The most serious infrastructural deficiencies have been removed, but the required extension to the infrastructure cannot be achieved in the short term. Among the positive and negative effects of public policies in the unified Germany, a few important implications for Korea could be defined as follows ; 1) Improving of locational conditions for Industry and of living environment is the most important points for the stabilization of regional migration from North to South Korea after reunification. 2) Establishment of a central organization that can control public investments is important for maximizing the effects of investments. 3) All public investments should be conducted under the basic principle of a balanced and ecological regional development. These findings indicate that the concrete preparations for reunification is essential for minimizing the negative effects and costs of reunification.
