A cartographic analysis is applied to the examination of urban landscape on the Honam Plain. It is found that street pattern and land use are the elements of urban landscape which strongly retain historical inertia. By contrast, building form and architecture are not as important as in German-speaking countries for the study of urban morphology on the Honam Plain. It is maintained that urban planning has been the most active force in the making of urban landscape on the Honam Plain. This reflects the fact that public agencies including the government has led the urban planning and development in Korea.
Jonju, Gunsan, Iri and Gimje Cities are different in the time that their urban landscapes took their basic patterns. Although Jonju, Gunsan and Iri Cities are now classified in the same street pattern as grid-pattern, they have followed the evolutionary processes of street pattern that are different from one another. It is suggested that further studies of urban morphology using cartographic analysis should be pursued towards Korean cities in the other regions than the Honam Plain.
