The provision of travel time information for drivers might influence the route choice behavior of travelers and allow them to improve their choices. The provision of reliable time service, which increase the certainty of arrival time and save drivers from the 'frustration' of driving during peak hours, may cause a shift to the use of alternative routes. A survey was conducted to collect data from automobile users. The survey contained groups of questions on the drivers' socioeconomic characteristics and preferences. The logit models were used to predict the number of drivers switching routes. To model the acquisition of trip information, three groups of variables were used : socioeconomic, travel characteristics and perception about VMS. The analysis results show that if the traffic conditions were better than usual in the preselected routes, then the drivers might decide to stay in this route. However, if the traffic conditions were worse than usual in the preselected routes, then the driver might decide to use alternative routes. The travel time saving was most significant when drivers acquire 40~60% of traffic information. The reliability of traffic information turned out to be a key factor in influencing route choice behavior. Note that information influences drivers' behavior only when it is relevant to their interests. This indicates that broad implementation of route-guidance systems might successfully influence drivers' behavior, as these systems provide specific details and instructions about each drivers trip.
