By the recent time, there seems to have been epistemological conflicts between the extremely different dual perspectives in environmental and townscape research ; namely ‘empirical perspective’ and ‘humanistic perspective’. The former is based on the scientific thinking and the latter on the humane thinking.
The recent comparative researches among the methodologies mostly have focused on the differences, between these dual perspectives of the environmental and towncape studies. But through the actual observation we could find that it is very ambiguous to classify all the research products exclusively into the dual categories, because many of the researches intrinsically have the dual aspects together, with more or less differences between the two.
Thus, we aimed to find out the specific content and the relative degree of the dual aspects presented in each monograph classified along the existing five categories of man-environment relationship ; perception, cognition, behavior, non verbal communication and existential experience.
In the results of the investigation we could find out, that even the so-called ‘empirical’ researches focused on the perception, cognition and behavior respectively, admitted in their own research that the ‘meaning’ and the ‘value’, which are the main themes of the humanistic researches, can be regarded as ‘the operational factor’ of their empirical theme itself(e.g.,figure and ground). And in the same manner, so-called humanistic researches, focused on the meaning and experience, also admitted that the empirical components, such as the visible appearances of landscape features and activities of the people, could make the dominant cause of the meaning formation.
These findings imply that the more complete interpretation of townscape as the real living world would rather be conducted through the ‘inter-perspective relationship’ or ‘multi-dimensional relationship’ within the existing townscape research methodologies, than be conducted exclusively by one of the two main perspectives of the empirical and the humanistic one. In this manner we think to be able to grasp the holistic essence of the complexity in townscape.
The ‘Yin-Yang and Five Element Theory’, one of the oriental worldviews, which had operated on the town making of this region, can be regarded as one of ‘the concepts of the complementary relationship’ proposed above, and thought to be useful to interpret the holistic essence of the Korean townscape.
