An archetype is a universal symbol that is originated in primitive human thinking. That exists in the mind of people in the form of the collective unconscious, and repeatedly appears in various literary works, reminding people of what's similar to that. In Cheon Sang-byeong's poems, ‘sky’ represents a heavenly image and stands for a mythological space that one tries to cast away the bondage of earthly life in search of eternal freedom. Such an archetypal imagination leads to emotional sublimation that pursues a primitive everlasting world. ‘A bird,’ one of his typical natural imageries, is an anima archetype that constituted the personal unconscious of the poet, and that is a symbol of the collective unconscious that seeks after a primitive permanent world. The poet revealed his absolute nihilism through archetypal images like ‘water’ or ‘hometown,’ but he tried to cleanse himself to overcome his nihilism, and meditated on human being, keeping the unavoidable fate of life and death in mind. In other words, he was in pursuit of return to a more fundamental archetypal space, namely maternity, through the image of water.
