Published in 1996 by The Korean Writers' Association, 『The Liberation Literature for 20 Years』 was all inclusive of 20 years' Korean literary history from the moment of liberation to the 1960s. This book is important in that it made almost all the history of literature take the same or similar perspective for Korean literature. Of course, this study was not conducted in the aspect that the perspective of 『The Liberation Literature for 20 Years』 was wrong anyhow. However, the investigator raised some issues in this study.
The point of time that 『The Liberation Literature for 20 Years』 began to include all was during the 5 years' period just after the liberation. This seemingly short but long period of five years from the liberation to the establishment of Korean government and the Korean War was very confusing but arranged with firm perspectives. So far, the five years' history after the liberation has been regarded as dividing Korean literary circles into the left and right wings, degrading and erasing the existence of the left wing. The issue in this study is this portion of history. What form of existence did the left and right wings take in the Korean literary circles after the liberation? How could the right wing literature reshuffle the literary history after the liberation and dominate the field of literature? Indeed, how can the viewpoint of The Korean Writers' Association that explains these issues be justifiable?
In order to get answers for these questions, the investigator divided the post-liberation era into two periods-before and after the establishment of Korean government, and examined the changes of literary circles' activities of the left and right wings. In addition, the right wing's various political activities, which were produced in volume within the literary circles, were checked in this study. Study findings show that the appearances of the right wing are not greatly different from those of the left wing after all, which the former persisted to reject. In conclusion, the investigator looked into the birth process of The Korean Writers' Association, an entity of the right wing, and checked the procedure of gathering its power as a symbol. In this series of processes, we can find the fictitiousness of the classification of the left and right wings and the dark side of literary 'purity' that the right wing defends.
