Paik, Chul(1908?1985) is a very important literary critic in Korean literary history. His career had been prominent over the half century from the early 1930s to his death in his whole life. His fame has been built up not only because of his great achievement as a representative literary critic in Korean literature front, but also because of both his great teaching as a professor and his contribution to the introduction of Korean literature to the other countries as a chairman of Korea's international P.E.N. Club for almost 20 years. His life and literary career can be summarized by the following 6 stages.
Infant and Adolescent Period (1908?1927) : schooling days - the schoolhouse and modern middle school
Youth Period (1928?1934) : pro-literature - English literature at Tokyo University, critic as a journalist in Korea, imprisonment
Adult Period (1935?1944) : literally converted from pro-literature - advocacy ofhumanism theory, secluded life in Peking
Middle Aged Period (1945?1955) : moderation and lecturing - moderation between theright wing and the left one, Korean literary history, professor
Elderly Aged Period (1956?1973) : literary exchange - a chair of Korean P.E.N Club, visiting scholar, introduction of new criticism to Korea
Old Aged Period (1974?1985) : retirement - his autobiography, several collections of essays
The late Chosun period, the Japanese colonial period, and the post-Korean War period have made distinct the three characteristics in his literary careers. 1) He started with proletarian literature, but finally pursued the humanistic literature. 2) Being converted from NAPF and KAPF to Humanism, he completed a literature of dialectic life. 3) He had uniquely tried to interpret Korean national literature with international perspectives.
His distinguishing literary achievements during those three periods are as the followings. 1) He had lead the critical literary circles, introducing the literary agendas like the farmer's literature in the early 1930s, his humanism theory, thenew criticism in the late 1950s and etc. 2) He had systematically established the firsthistory of Korean literature after comprehending and compiling the data on the formation and development of new Korean literature. 3) As a visiting scholar to foreign universities, he had introduced Korean literature to the world, and as a chairman of Korean PEN club, he had long contributed to the internationalization of Korean literature and even held the 37th International P.E.N. congress in Seoul.
Research and evaluation of Paik Chul should be made seriously after the centennial commemoration of his birth.
