About 100 Buddhist statues made during 1270-1392 in the late Koryo dynasty have been preserved in Korea and Japan. Among them, about 30 statues taken during the Japanese invasion in the period of 1350 are said to be located in the western part of Japan.
Among many Buddhist statues in the western Japan area, the gilt bronze seated Bodhisattva statue of Fumyo-ji temple (普明寺) at Saga (佐賀), Kusyu (九州) province is known as one of outstanding statues of the Koryo dynasty. It is 66.5㎝ in height and famous for its beautiful and lively face. Also it is famous for its use of delicate carving method. The similar types of sculptures are bronze Bodhisattva statues of Sigajigannon-do (志賀社觀音堂) and Hangan-ji (本願寺).
All three statues show common similarities in the point of stability that comes from the elongated oval face, long neck, slender shoulder, long upper body and delicately crafted jewelry. They are also similar in the shape of the skirt hanged down on both knees, the dress hem hanged as S-typed curve at the middle part of dress.
This types of Bodhisattva statues are different from the statues of Choongcheong and Gyungsang provinces during that period, which capture our special attention.
The Bodhisattva statues remaining in the western part of Japan show characteristics related to the historical facts of the Japanese invasion on Koryo dynasty territory. By observing the invasion area, we can trace the localities of Koryo Buddhist sculptures. According to the record of Koryo history, the most impoverished area caused by Japanese invasions were Gyungsang (慶尙道), Jeolla (全羅道) and Choongcheong (忠淸道) provinces and Gyeonggi (京畿道) province in the near Gaeseong-the Capital at that time. With the invasion, according to the records, many Cultural treasures were also seizured.
The Bodhisattva seated stature of Fumyo-ji temple are different from Bodhisattva statures located in Gyungsang province, and similar with Buddhist Arts of Royal family such as Avalokitesvara Painting, Kagami Shrine, Saga Prefecture in Japan. Also Japanese invaded Capital Gaeseong and suburb area during that time. Based on the above facts, Bodhisattva seated statue of Fumyoji temple are thought to have been built in the area of Capital Gaeseong or near areas.
Many Japanese seizure of Buddhist sculptures including Koryo statues were believed to be done by the economic crisis due to the long lagged domestic dvil war which made them expensive to build golden statue. Also Buddhist sculptures of late Koryo dynasty had lots of Amitabha Buddha. During that time Japanese religion was especially becoming popular with Pure land Buddhism resulted from the robbery of the Koryo sculptures by the Japanese.
Finally, the study of the impact on the japanese buddhist sculptures affected by the robbed Koryo sculptures is performed. Even though many Koryo Buddhist sculptures have been preserved at the Temple and a Shrine (神社) as the Main Buddha, they affected minimum influence on Japan. Although their number is small, the important statues remain such as Bronze seated Bodhisattva of 1809 in Saga, Japan and Bronze seated Kishitigarbha Bodhisattva in America. As a result, thorough study should be done in that area.
