Robert Morris(1931- ), one of the founders of the Minimalist art movement, has presented various concepts and works since late 1950s. He worked across so many genres of artistic practice(Minimal and Conceptual sculpture, performance art, land art, scatter pieces, felt works, painting, drawing, photography, film, readymades, image/text composites, environment work). In spite of this variety, his works have a common and basic concept, “process”, which emphasizes the temporal process for artist’ s making and spectator’ s experiencing a work.
This study attempts to prove that “process” is the most important concept for his art, and that it offers consistent methods for his works. His “process” makes his art characteristic and different from other artists.
For Morris, the “process” means that on the one hand, all procedures of artmaking including form, content, artist’ s intention and purport come up to the surface, on the other hand, viewer’ s experiences are not decided uniformly but opened to the various possibilities. The “process” accompanies the temporality which is not transcendental or ideological but existential and phenomenological.
Morris always rejects the notion that art lasts. Furthermore, he attacks the rationalistic notion that art is a form of work that results in a finished product. He thinks that paradox and the fugitive be more attractive than assured style and stable position. In these means, his concept “process” is based on as well as the doubts and indeterminacy in science of his times as the change of philosophy and the world view.
Morris could manifest various psychological, philosophical and sociological problems by means of the “process”. In order to express the idea of paradoxical and complex space of the self, on the one hand, he uses a method of closure directly in making objects, and installations which imprison his own or spectator’ s body, on the other hand, makes spectators experience the fragmented and confused language and sound. Psychological frustration and embarrassment are experienced once more in Mirror installations that confuse spectator’ s perception.
From the study on “process” of Morris, we can get the result that “process” is a basic element for understanding his works, and testifies his outlook on art and world. Artists in Process Art and Conceptual Art, Earth Art in 1970s, stress the “process” too. But his “process” is an unique method which is originated from the movement, temporality, and spatiality of dance. It was his inevitable consequence that reflected his individual philosophy and the spirit of his times.
