In Japan modern “Art” started playing an important role in building nation-state, so the status of art within the nation-state and the subjects of art administrating were changed and adjusted under the competitions and debates among various positions. With this perspective, I intended to shed light on the process that the artist and the art critic had be born in Japan, especially focusing on the struggles between the artist and the art critic for the publicity of art staged in the official art competition.
