This essay presents a close reading of Jane Austen’s unfinished novel Sanditon, considering it to be accomplished enough to be hailed as a sort of accurately detailed and critically analyzed anthropological ‘thick description’ report on the British watering place in the 1810s. In embracing the tripartite cultural matrix of reading, woman, and consumption which is a long-held misogynistic concept exerting of particular relevance to Austen’s time, Sanditon attempts to erase the stigma of female reading and propose the alternative and healthy mode of book consumption through the representation of self-educated, well-read, intelligent, and wholesome heroine and her exemplary reading career. As Austen’s deliberation of the issue of female education is exercised in a larger social context of the modern British culture of consumerism, the novel becomes a site of spectacle of consumerism where different modes of consumption compete and negotiate. With the main focus on the ways in which the heroine’s ‘healthy’ consumption of books/literature and Sanditonian’s ‘unhealthy’ consumption of medicine/body are contrasted, this essay demonstrates what Austen envisions in the heroine as an ideal reader, consumer and female subject as well.
