This essay is the last part of my project, entitled "Jacques Lacan, Dialoguing with Melanie Klein." It deals with analytic technique and interpretation in Klein and Lacan.
In the essay, I approach the discussion of this subject from a theoretical point of transference interpretation(Klein) or transference work(Lacan) and then illustrate it with a small clinical vignette(Mr. S case). The result of my study is as follows;
(1) Words constitute the basic vehicle of the psychoanalytic situation: they are the means by which a symptom and its underlying structure are analysed, and as a result they are at the heart of the question of interpretation.
(2) For both Klein and Lacan, chains of signifying terms, and more particularly, the networks constructed by their intersections, form the material within which interpretation operates. The correctness of an interpretation is judged by whether or not it facilitates the production of more material, not by whether it has other effects on the analysand, whether the analysand refuses it or agrees to it, or whether the analyst is pleased with it. That is, it is effective if it overcomes to some extent the resistance.
(3) The main difference in Klein is that she believes that words are accessible and that they lead to meanings fairly directly, and that analyst can interpret anxiety from the beginning. For Lacan the idea of a symbolic equation is replaced by a more structured field of symbolism and this is totally unanswered in Klein’'s school, where it is assumed that you can rely on the ego and commonsense.
(4) I concluded that one of the criticisms that Lacan was made of Klein, while he evidently respected her work, had to do with his view that she worked mainly in the field of the Imaginary, possibly introducing the Symbolic Register but without realizing it. Lacan asserted that Klein's work centered on the Imaginary and he equated Kleinian transference interpretation with a sort of paranoia centered on the analyst.
(5) But if one considers Klein in the light of the developments of Bion and Segal, one could say that the capacity to think, that is, the capacity to identify the patients’' anxieties, register their projection onto the analyst, and then put them into the words, is a complex phenomenon, not dissimilar to the capacity to see the object as a separate whole object who can relate to another separate whole object in the oedipal triangle.
