Lacan and Joyce: Writing as SymptomTeckyoung KwonIt is a well known fact that Lacan’s last set of “Seminars” was about Joyce and symptoms. This has not yet been fully examined. This paper explores the final Lacan in light of Joyce’s early works, Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Up to this point, critics have been mostly concerned with the last experimental work, Finnegans Wake, looking for similarity between Lacan and Joyce. However, my attention is directed to the earlier works where epiphany and sinthome, an old term for symptom, reveal a more vivid and close relationship. The paper pursues the significance of the terms: symptom, sinthome, and epiphany, to solve the puns Lacan makes and to elucidate how Joyce and Lacan enjoyed the aesthetics of Thomas Aquinas. The ultimate conclusion of this examination is that Lacan’s crucial conception of the Real is nothing but Joycean epiphany. They both enjoy the “litter” of writing and share the common view that our universe is composed of two opposites linked like a moebius strip going around forever.
