A Lie of the Mind by Shepard deals with the matter of de-construction of gender. The de-construction of gender can be made possible when the fixed concepts of femininity and masculinity are changed, because the cultural concepts have created the hierarchical dichotomy between women and men.
Butler proposes that gender distinction is to blame for the disrupted relations between men and women. The disruption of gender distinction can be possible through the subject's consistent performing activities toward the transformation of the self. Performativity is an alternative possibility for the current hierarchical and alienated relationships between people, because performativity is a way for a subject to slough from the given and established subjectivity and to attain a new and compatible subjectivity.
Beth, Jake and Frankie of A Lie of the Mind go through transformations by eradicating the given subjectivity. Beth becomes a different Beth by resorting to masquerade. This cross-dressing is a sort of game she plays in order to adopt a role different from the role she played in the past when she was beaten by Jake. With this role-playing, she comes to attain some masculine attributes.
Jake, who was once so aggressive and self-centered, gradually becomes a new man who doesn't depend on and doesn't treat woman as "the other" any more. In order to achieve this, he forgets male-oriented heritage, and he comes to have the body image of a horse. Being a horse is to have inter-subjective relations with Beth. And finally, he even accepts Beth's choice of Frankie instead of himself. This signifies that he strips himself of the bad attributes of masculinity, such as self-centeredness and aggressivity. With their performativity, they show that the boundary of gender is not fixed and can always be changed. Also, the fact that the union between Beth and Frankie is referred to as "the real marriage" implies that the strict gender difference has been to blame for the tormenting relationship between men and women. A Lie of the Mind can be seen as a play that shows a reconsideration of gender difference can make positive relations between the two sexes possible.
