Recent studies became interested in the view that gender can be categorized as a social and cultural construction which influences on the linguistic behavior along with other factors such as age, socio-economic status, ethnicity, and situational communication contents. The linguistic construction of gender is regarded as an individual behavior of active interaction, that is, ``doing gender``. ``Doing gender`` in the linguistic gender research is limited to the area mainly on the gender-oriented typical communication behavior. It is hypothesized that there exist gender-oriented stereotypes of the male or female communication behavior. Even the same communication behavior can be perceived differently whether it is produced by man or woman. The gender construction is considered as a bilateral process taking place not only in the language production but also in its reception. This study aims to support the hypothesis through investigating the findings of various studies on recognizing gender stereotypes. Under these assumptions, however, it remains unclear what theoretical background is based on the cognition framework, and how the cognition process undergoes. (Catholic University of Daegu)
