This thesis studies the British feminist drama in the works of Caryl Churchill, the most widely performed and published female dramatist in contemporary British theater. Her works span a range of thematic and formal concerns, which involves innovative techniques such as manipulation of casting and chronology, as well as wider social and political questions based on Socialist-Feminism.
Cloud Nine explores sexual politics. In Act Ⅰ, set in Victorian colonial Africa, the author connects colonial, sexual and class oppression through cross-gender casting that is used to underscore the artificiality of conventional sex-roles. Act Ⅱ leaps a hundred years in historical time, with the characters aging 25 years, and deals with the libertarian life-styles in which they try out new social arrangements in questioning of class, gender, and homophobic oppression.
Top Girls calls the issue of "woman's success in the society"into question. The first scene is set in a restaurant, where Marlene, a successful businesswoman from the present, entertains a group of famous and successful women from the past. But their sporadic interaction displays that they committed to change only as an individual success rather than a social goal. In a final naturalistic scene in Marlene's working-class sister's home, it shows a powerful argument between the two sisters, Marlene who represents the capitalist ideology and Joyce who represents the Marxist ideology. The author makes no judgement on either sister, simply presenting them as having made different choices.
Churchill has been receptive to the influence of Socialist-Feminism and her works touches on the issues of sexual and class power. However, what concerns Churchill is "possibility for change" rather than any strict socialism or politics. In her works, she steadily pursues the possibility for change that is addressed to woman herself, society, and the institutionalized theatre.
