This essay aims to locate Caryl Churchill and David Lan's A Mouthful of Birds in the British tradition of comedy, while analyzing the comic strategies of the so-called "tearing apart," the strategies they create in order to show socialist/feminist analyses of contemporary issues as well as to suggest a possibility for change. On the one hand, I argue that Caryl Churchill and David Lan are rewriting Shakespearean comic aspects represented in the middle scenes of A Midsummer Night's Dream, when they allow seven characters a dream-like fantastic space through "possession," in which repressed desires and unconscious obsessions can be manifested in their extremity. But at the same time those two playwrights are, I propose, very similar to Timberlake Wertenbaker, a recent British socialist/feminist dramatist in believing that theatre or performance not only empowers those at the margin including women but also brings about radical social change. I suggest that A Mouthful of Birds is somewhere between Shakespeare and Wertenbaker, combining fantasy with social reform, pleasure with resistance, and possession with will. On the other hand, in examining Churchill and Lan's artistic use of experimental theater, I am also exploring their commitment to reveal and reconstruct the modem British society's ideological patterns. I see Churchill and Lan's making a link between the theatrical act of "tearing apart"the traditional comic forms and the political act of "tearing apart" everyday cultual structures and prevailing patterns. I also argue that Churchill and Lan transform the Euripidean tragic version of the Greek Myth, in which Agave's (a mother's) act of "tearing apart Pentheus' (a son's) body" is regarded as a bad dream, into the comic version where the same violent act can be a form of resistance. I conclude that Churchill and Lan carefully transform the traditional British comic strategies into an experimental comedy of fragmentation, fluidity, and transformation, which intensifies the urgency of the desire to change, to "tear apart"the prevailing social structure.
