Employing the emerson’s notion of ‘double consciousness,’ this paper explains the poetic characteristics of Kim Su-Young’s poetry. The double consciousness plaguing the individual, Emerson said, summerized the downward pull of life in society and the upward pull of communion with the divine. Kim’s poetry written before April 19 revolution express it a conflict between the poetry(=beauty) vs. the worldly, but those written after April 19 revolution express it a conflict between freedom and it‘s absence or oppression. Especially the latter poetry reveals the condition of ‘the life of this life.‘ From the Kim’s perspective, the world is full of din and buzz against a straightforward sound like the fall. Kim’s poetry, however, do not intend to make the sound of music, but rather, to make mimicry of the noise, by which they take adventure of sarcasm on the world of noisy and chaos. Second, Kim Su-young considered freedom as a token for the promise of utopia, the antipodes of worldly life, but it, Racan likely spoken, was a signifying of the desire always differing to reach it’s destination. A revolutionary experience of April 19, 1960, a moment of illumination, nevertheless, aspired him to retrieve freedom once having lost. Freedom means to Kim that realizing an essential quality of the poetry which reveal[aletheuein/entbergen] the dream as well as the feeling depressed by political powers or other obstacles. Third, another key semanteme of Kim’s poetry is love, a significant counterpart of freedom, being considered the power to realize the impossible and the dream. It is a sort of medium to sublimate the worldly life in the utopian one. The poetry is a technique of love, coming near, stepping into, and enduring the chaos of the worldly, and made through with freedom at the end.
