Recently mass of articles has been issued on the political history of the Chosun Dynasty, of which study began as a department of subject approach in the early 1980s. The characters of the political history writings after the 1990s are as follows. First, the positive research focused on the factional policies was executed and activated with the proper evidences. Second, there appeared issues on the arguments of the government by the literati and the historical periodization relating the former. Third, there has been no dispute over the historical facts and interpretations. Fourth, a sufficient number of scholars makes it possible to have published the articles either as a series or as a complement.
Particularly the scope of the historical understanding was enlarged relating to the politics of Chosun Dynasty as a new concept of periods was accepted. It has become possible to separate the Chosun Dynasty into three or four periods by this concept, instead of the old-fashioned dichotomous periodization. Especially the 17th and 18th century can be treated separatedly as the middle period of the history of Chosun.
According to the 7th National Curriculum, a new textbook of Korean history was published and shaped on the format of the subject approaches, which has serious problems about the periodization. There are 4 subjects in the textbook. In the politics subject, the new periodization of Chosun is applied. Contrary to it in the other subjects the Chosun Dynasty is separated into the early period and the late. The former is named 'recent age' but the latter is not indicated as a proper age but treated as a transitional times with ambiguous expression.
In order to overcome this absurdity, it is recommendable to put the political approach in the center of the textbook construction and to return to the annalistic approach. And we must prevent the textbook from being composed of unrelated subjects. Rather it is desirable to write the cultural, the economical, and the social aspects beforehand and later to colligate the related facts by explaining the political situation. For the political history has in itself the symbol of incubating the whole range of historical researches.
