This thesis explores the transition of understanding and the teaching aims of Korean History. One of its main proposals is that proper understanding of Korean History has been frustrated by the tortured modernization process. Another is that the objectives of history teaching have been suggested on the foundation of political purposes or social designs.
We Koreans have understood our history as a National History. This means that we have thought ourselves are different from other nations and cultures. Owing to this historical understanding, we have been able to maintain our nation and traditional culture. But nowadays, we have an inclination to ignore the values of National History. So we already denied the independent position of that subject on the middle school curriculum, and made it a part of the subject of social education. As the result of this, we are gradually losing the independence consciousness and the self-respect as a korean.
Understanding of Korean History has been matured with the comprehension that the developing process of Korean nation is in the line of the universal process of world history. We have thought that the diversities of each nation’s culture should be admitted and respected. So we have made efforts to come true the peace and mutual prosperity of mankind. What we have pursued is not the aggressive nationalism but the mutual prosperity of nations. This is to be the teaching objectives of Korean History.
