Due to implications of social stratification, the children(sons) of concubines (who were ones of low birth themselves) were considered to be lowly men in the eyes of the society, and had to suffer severe discrimination during the Goryeo dynasty period. Yet coming into the 15th century, even though the practice of discriminating children of concubines from other children of legitimate wives still existed, the notion of considering the paternal line more importantly than the maternal line started to form, and as a result the social and economic status of the children(sons) of low-birth concubines were to an extent elevated. This kind of elevation also provided the social status of the sons of low-birth concubines with a certain level of stability, and enabled them to engage more strongly in social activities as well.
But the level of public’s acceptance of the ‘Shared Nature(同氣)’ theory, which contributed to the strengthening of the notion prioritizing the paternal line, did not reach sufficient heights because of the age-old sentiment of discrimination between the high and low or the noble and the mean, so governmental policies regarding the low-birth concubines’ children were in a constantly challenged status. When it became apparent that the government’s policy would result in elevating the social status of the low-birth concubines’ children, the Yangban officials objected to such policies in the name of maintaining the social order of stratification, and clashed with the government over many relevant issues.
They feared that the social order would be breached by the mingling of people from mean and humble social status and the people from noble and high social status. They argued the importance of maintaining such social order, and tried to force the government to devise a new policy of literally barring the low-birth concubines’ sons from pursuing and applying for the offices inside the government. The age-old notion and practice of discrimination was still strongly intact, and was preventing the children of low-birth concubines from ascending to higher social positions.
