The paper examines Luther's understanding on family, love, and education in order to discover a theological foundation of "Homeschooling." Out of his own experience, Luther criticizes Medieval monasticism and its education. In Luther's perspective, monastic education is based on the theology of merit. Thus, monastic education devalues the significance of family and marriage in Christian education. Luther opposes against this.
In Luther's argument, it is God who initiates family and marriage for human education. Therefore, the primary responsibility of education does not lie in the monasteries or churches but home and marriage. Primarily, parents are given for children as their teachers. Luther's emphasis on family and marriage a detour from the whole ideology of medieval monasticism.
Rejecting legalistic education of monasticism, Luther stresses the significance of "love" in Christian education. Based upon the dialectic of Law and Gospel, Luther argues that the Law only has the function of a schoolmaster. The "real" teacher is Gospel and God. Therefore, the education of law is only a transitory education. Home education must be conducted by parental love which lacks in schools and schoolmasters. Thus home is the final place of education.
