This thesis is intended to look into dialogic aspect and characteristic of discoursein Chiaksan(雉岳山), the novel of Lee In-Jik. The novel was written juSt before the unification of Korea and Japan, the critical situation of Korea in modern history. Until now this work has been regarded as the type of "traditional family novel" or "conventional novel" But, in this thesis I intend to raise a question about these existing arguments and analyze the work in a new way on the basis of Bakhtin's "Discourse Theory" and Saussure's "The Structure Linguistics"
In this thesis I examine the work with three main methods. First, I look through dialogic aspect between narrator and characters of the work. Second, I research the interconnection of text at the level of discourse. Third, I look into the way of narrator's making discourse and the aspect of ideology.
To sum up, the characteristic of discourse on Chiaksan(雉岳山) is that narrator described the character and the situation of that time objectively in his book. It is noticeable that the author tried to only deliver the subject rather than narrate his writing through a dialogic relationship among characters who were independent and unique. Consequently utterance subject is just delivering a single idea which is decided by the subject level of discourse in a monologue tone. and this is expressed in the way of the frame of conflict among the characters of book.
In one way or another, however, subject level of discourse is related to the reaction of the object about its own discourse. As a result, we can realize the fact that this novel shows, though vaguely, the dialogic aspect.
Through this thesis it is revealed that the ideology of Chiaksan (雉岳山) has more active meanings such as "Make this country more enlightened one by means of modern education and civilization" and it is beyond the phase, which existing studies have discussed about: 'abolishing superstition', 'encouraging modern educational ideas', and 'getting over the feud between mother-in-law and daughter-in law' and so on.
