This study presents an analysis of journey novels in terms of roads and thresholds. Sharing the same pattern of a journey novel, A Road to Sampo, A Road to Cheonmacbong, and A Road to Tongdo Buddbist Temple show very different types of refraction according to the reality faced by the authors.
'A road' from the 1970s depicted by Hwang Seok-yeong shows the process of kind consciousness of the characters that were forced to live a life of a 'wanderer' due to the evil practices of industrialization. The chronograph of a road symbolizes the suffering of life. The final destination of the characters is 'the south' or 'Sampo.' The hometown is supposed to deliver the utopian comfort but no longer exists due to industrialization.
'A road' from the 1980s tells a story of a person living a period when the net of ideology was too dominating. The insulation and secession among the generation of the father, the son, and granddaughter are revealed through 'tombs.' In the work, the chronograph of 'a threshold' is the Cheonmachong. There is a main character who takes his family to a trip in an attempt to search for his identity between the tomb of his father and the tombs of the ancestors from a thousand years ago.
'A road' from the 1990s is free from ideology and unfolds a journey devoted to an individual's identity. The lady that bound 'me' can be a real person or a being whose identity can be understood in many ways. Anything that can attract me and detain 'my' soul can be the 'lady.' Tongdo Buddhist temple, which is the place to help me realize the fact, becomes the chronograph of 'a threshold.'
