This thesis studied the quest novels shown in the beginning of the Korean modern novel in order to examine narrative structure of quest novel and formation of the Korean modern novel. Quest novel reveals disharmony, while High novel shows the interaction between person and environment.
The Korean modern novel shows various quest novel forms which reveals disharmony, before realism novel appears. For example, Tears of Blood(Lee In Jik). Pitiless(Lee Kwang Soo). Baiddaragi(Kim Dong In). Tree Frog in the Specimen room(Yum Sang Sub), and Before Mansei(Yum Sang Sub)shows various quest novel forms. Of course these quest novels reveals various narrative forms each other.
Tears of Blood and Pitiless reveal narrative form in pre-modern age, but Baiddaragi shows the esthetic quest of modern estheticism. And Tree Frog in the Specimen room and Before Mansei show postcolonial quest to the third space.
This change of quest novel forms shows a course of the formation of the Korean modern novel. This thesis studied various guest novel forms in comparison with realism novel, in order to examine the course of the formation of the Korean modern novel.
