There are two major themes in Sassinamjeongki which reflect the lineage- centered culture and socio-political milieu of 17th century in Chosun dynasty.
The first one is the destiny of the Yoos which represents a noble family striving for hegemony in Chosun dynasty. The second is put on the important role of Gyumun[閨門] which includes all the wives of a husband.
While the author, Kim, Mahn Joong weaved the first theme into the second, he revealed the aristocrat’s agony and anxieties from both in and out of the family.
The political fluctuating state of the period caused the outer factor threatening the existence of one pedigree. Once the head of the family is tangled in the meshes of a political plot and is sentenced to death or exile, the whole family is put to the to-be-or-not-to-be situation.
The inner threatening factor comes from the conflict between wife and concubine as well as a patriarch’s lack of ability to grasp it.
Among those threatening factors, Kim considered the inner family discord to be more serious than the outer threat, which can be explained why Kim attributed Yu, Yeon-soo’s exile to the result of two women’s dissension in the story.
Though Kim knew well enough that the polygamy system itself was enormously problematic, instead of getting rid of the custom he chose to accept it as a constant rule and tried to find the way to harmonize within a family in an established society.
In Sassinamjeongki, Kim by drawing a vivid picture of a swaying noble family, he showed us the profound consciousness of people at the mercy of the unstable political climate and suggested how to survive the harsh reality by keeping good relationships within Gyumun in the family.
