This study examines the pattern of the family discourses depicted in Kim 'Won-ll's serial novels, "The Memories of Sad Times". The four titles, "'Who Am !?", "I Know.", "I Am Mraid", "I Did not Exist.", all imply each themes. This paper indicates that those themes have a close link with the meaning of 'family'. Mrs Han in "Who Am I?" ends up dying all after drifting outside of her family. On the other hand, Chojung-daek in "I Know" lives with a pride within the boundary of a family. However, her false consciousness of family (without root) is revealed as her past is disclosed. In the end, she faces death under dereliction from her own family. The two stories resemble in the sense that they show the ending of a closed life fixated on a family. In the story of "I Am Afraid", a true sense of family community is suggested through a model of Yoon Yeo-Eun. The writer depicts a life of a mature, community-oriented individual, Yoon Yeo-Eun, and suggests that a true family can be established only when a family boundaries based on egoism are transcended. "I Did not Exist" is a discourse of father. The protagonist, Kim Jung-Ho can not find the answer to his mysterious wounded life. However, his purity, based on the greed-free attitudes, triggers to build up brotherhood with his cousin. He not only looks after his uncle who has lost his own family, but also cherishes the meaning of his uncle's life. The characterization of Kim Hyung-Jun implies dignity of a prototype of traditional family. The virtue of this novel is the use of an objective perspective. The well-balanced sense of the writer, who is in his sixties, corresponds with his self confession arising from his deep inside. The main characters in this novel seek for repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation towards their lives. It is so because this is a story of the old people who confirm each moment that to live is a process to reach death. Nevertheless, the writer, through the lives of four elderly people, urges us to reflect the past strictly, which is the responsibility of 'present' generation. He emphasizes that no one can be free from the past, and that the future is significant as much, for this reason. Awareness of the true sense of a family may become a starting point.
