This study considers the diachronic letter types and functions subjected to the letter types ‘ハ’, ‘佳’, ‘か’, ‘可’ in Ipkyeoch material from the period of the Goryeo to the Joseon Dynasty. Presented below are several features of these letter types. The letter type ‘ハ’ is translated into ‘只’ in ‘Idu’ material and it is spelled ‘ハ’ in Seokdok Ipkyeoch and Eumdok Ipkyeoch material. The sound is ‘ㄱ’or ‘기’ in Seokdok Ipkyeoch and Eumdok Ipkyeoch material but in Idu material, the sound may be ‘지’.
The letter type ‘佳’ is rare but appears in both Idu and Eumdok material. The letter is pronounced as ‘가’. It is presented as ‘佳叱’ in Idu material and ‘佳’ and ‘佳七叱’ in Eumdok Ipkyeoch material. From the period of the Goryeo to the Joseon Dynasty, ‘佳叱’ in Idu material is shown as the single particle and is similar to ‘only’ or ‘just’. However, ‘佳/佳七(갓/갓)’ in Eumdok Ipkyeoch material is ‘火七(밧)’ in Eumdok Ipkyeoch and ‘밧/봇’, ‘곳/옷’ in Middle Korean material.
The letter type ‘か’ is frequently used in Idu and Eumdok material but not in Seokdok Ipkyeoch material it is written as ‘加于’ and ‘是白加尼’ in Idu material. Throughout this time, ‘加’ is borrowed from the Chinese character’s translation and appears frequently in material from the late Goryeo to late in the period of Japanese imperialism. The ‘か’ in Eumdok Ipkyeoch material is substituted for the letter type ‘ホ’, ‘入’. This Ipkyeoch is used to the discretion of Ipkyeoch recorders.
The letter type ‘可’ can be only found in Idu and Eumdok material it is difficult to find in Seokdok Ipkyeoch material. In Idu material, it may appearas ‘-可只(가지)’ or ‘-如可다가)’. In material throughout the Goryeo to the Joseon Dynasty, ‘可只’ refers to ‘-까지’, ‘조차’, which translates to ‘till’ or ‘even’ in Modern Korean. The ‘-如可’ is similar to ‘-다가’ or ‘get’ in 15th century documents, but it refers to ‘도중에’ or ‘on the way’. The ‘可’ shown in Eumdok Ipkyeoch appears in material from the period of late Goryeo to Japanese imperialism. The ‘可’ in Eumdok Ipkyeoch is used as a confirmation and to stop an action.
