“Goblin Market” is a monumental poem in Christina Rossetti's poetic career in that it established her as a distinguished new poet of originality and strong individuality. It shows the result of her ten years' self-education towards having her own voice and a female poetic subjectivity, overcoming the male-dominated literary tradition. In the biographical level, Rossetti was naturally in the male literary influences, and, especially, in the reach of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Bible, Milton, St. Augustine, Plato, Dante, and the Keats-Tennyson tradition are in the root of her spiritual world. Nevertheless, to be reborn as a poet of a true female subjectivity, she needs to pass through the male-centered literary legacy and to have her own poetic strategies.
In “Goblin Market”, Rossetti displays how she has found out her poetic strategies and educated herself to put the strategies into poetic embodiments. Laura and Lizzie, the two heroines, are Rossetti's divided selves and, at the same time, the objectified figures, that means, any women poets of a female subjectivity. To attain such a poetic subjectivity, Laura's artistic curiosity and passionate temperament, and Lizzie's self-sacrificing love, endurance, and heroic spirit are all required. Through their fierce conflicts with the goblins(male muses), Laura and Lizzie, and Rossetti educate and discipline themselves and other women poets in the later ages. Rossetti's poetics of self-denial and self-renunciation, and her mask of a woman of endurance and condescension are all self-chosen strategies to protect herself from and resist the male-dominated nineteenth-century English society.
