This paper attempts to divulge and restore the significance of Rossetti's some of general poems which have received scanty illumination owing to their idiosyncratic nature of the theme i.e., carpe diem. Traditional critics tend to view Rossetti as a devoted poetess of Christian doctrines devoid of any doubts about them. However, her poetry undergoes a dialectical process of poetic imagination. The first phase of her creative imagination focuses on the theme of vanity of vanities, against which is antithetically opposed the theme of carpe diem as the second eruption of her creation. Finally, the pinnacle of her poetic creation is crowned with a unified vision of this world and the next world.
Her poems of ‘vanity of vanities’ do not preach a total renunciation of earthly beauty and pleasure; the poetess insinuates the transience and finitude inherent in them. Her sometimes doubts about the existence of the blissful world have intermittently erupted as poems of carpe diem. These poems are classified into two groups: the poetry of revenant and that of earthly pleasure. The antithetical tension and conflict between these two tendencies are synthethized and poetically visualized as the vision of flower and fruit in 'A Dirge'. In this poem, her poetic vision pictures two Suns, which have legitimate function in their own term; the earthly Sun that blooms beautiful flowers in this world and the eternal Sun that ripens the fruit in the next world.
To summarize, Rossetti is a poetess of paradox who has made an agonized effort to synthethize the two diametrically opposed drives: the centripetal force of vanity of vanities and the centrifugal force of carpe diem. Ultimately, she transcends the opposition and experiences the blessed revelation of synthesis.
