Korea is currently facing a very serious crisis in the humanities and even in the scholarly society. The crisis in the humanities can be epitomized by interior and exterior factors. Interior factor includes complacency in academism, which was caused by inherent traits of the humanities, and lethargic response to changes. Exterior factor is the changes in the outside conditions that define the humanities.
With many efforts underway in the academia to overcome the crisis, [the Korea Culture and Contents Agency] of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism embarked upon 'a project of transforming cultural prototypes into digital contents'(우리문화원형사업) in 2002, sending repercussions through the humanities community. Since then, many local universities have redirectedtheir energy toward development of culture contents as a way to get over the crisis. Some of them even changed the names of their humanities-related departments with culture content or the likes and others opened new culture content classes in their curricula.
The project had been carried out in separate sectors such asdevelopment of culture content scenarios, development of visual and audio materials and finding of local culture resources.
Another project selected in 2003 shed light not only on material but also spiritual aspects such as meanings and symbols of life by delving into "funeral rites for the dead." Additionally, it dealt with such subjects as merchants, trade economy, astronomy, eatery culture, kisaeng (equivalent of geisha in Japan). Therefore, it covered new areas - historical figures, economy, culturallegacy, literature, Buddist paintings, rites of passage, eatery and astronomy which were not included in its previous project in 2002.
Also noteworthy were the efforts to broaden the scope of cultural prototypes available for digital contents to include China, by developing into contents the [Taepyong Kwangki], a synthesis of the Chinese literature.
On the other hand, through a survey of the demand for cultural prototypes by sector and by industry, the [Korea Culture and Contents Agency] has identified the issues that should be taken into account when planning and developing culture contents. Based on these data, we could identify the problems and challenges concerning culture contents, as follows:
1) To globalize culture contents
2) To develop a specialized and organized curriculum
3) To set up a network that links the academic, research, industrial, and governmental bodies
4) To strengthen the protection of intellectual property
5) To clarify the commercial viability of the pure academic discipline
Media Studies, which serves men as an intermediary for knowledge and information, has made remarkable progress over the last decades. We may say that the technology for delivering knowledge and information has almost reached the peak of its development.
What is important now is to create the contents to fill up this closely-knit knowledge-and-information network, rather than to further develop the media technology. And it belongs to the cultural sciences to create these contents.
Such efforts will lead not only to the revival of the cultural sciences or to the growth of the culture content industry, but will also help create new values for the whole society. At the same time, they will constitute an opportunity to create a new form of cultural sciences for the 21st century.
