The great wave of strikes in November-December 1947 in France was the arena, in which the latent struggle between the majority and the minority of the CGT(General Confederation of Labor) culminated. Their conflict took place surrounding the issue of calling a strike and during the strikes. In this conflict, the workers who belonged to the majority of the CGT, often forced the non-strikers to join their strikes. These violent coercions caused the indignation of rank-andfile workers in the FO(‘Force of Workers’, the minority of the CGT), which soon pushed the FO leaders into the third split of the CGT on December 19, 1947.
However the great wave of strikes was only a moment of this split, not its cause. The third split was not different from the first two splits (those in 1921 and 1939) that appeared between the pro-communists and non-communists. Therefore, the split of 1947- 1948 was not a new sort but the old one, which resulted from two incompatible views of trade union and labor movement. Moreover, considering that the minority began to organize themselves in 1943, it should be noted that the decision of split in late 1947 was not abrupt, and the precedents of split such as those of the PTT(Post Office) federation in October 1946 and the federation of Railroad in July 1947 show that the split could happen before the great strikes.
