The movie ‘Germinal’, based on Emile Zola’s novel similarly entitled, provides its audience with a representation of the conditions and lifestyles of 19th century Northern France local miners. Up until recently, the history of the labor movement has traditionally been described by characterizing workers in class statements. In ‘Germinal’, audiences become acquainted with their human aspect by means of miner character being depicted as having lives linked to their surrounding culture over being a collective membership.
Germinal’s miners experience harsh working conditions and great poverty and are driven to obtain justice against their indifferent employer by means of a strike which they hope will gain them the minimum wage necessary to allow them the purchase of their daily bread. They are unconcerned about social equality. Those over them are not ready to listen to their requirements.
Therefore, the origin hateful sentiments amongst them results in tragic and fatal destructions of human lives and properties, which is the lethargizing picture of the primitive stage of labor movement. As an audience we are asked to reflect upon the reasons, their purposes and its consequences, whereby we think about what the nature of the true labor revolution in contemporary society should be like to establish coexistence and coprosperity between labor and management.
