One of the general prejudices about the late nineteenth-century French labor movement is the idea that the FTSF, the first socialist working-class political party in France composed dominantly of male skilled workers, ignored women’s issues by focusing heavily on protecting their privileges in front of the influx of non skilled workers including women. But unlike that idea, the party tried to improve women’s political and economic conditions throughout the 1880s. The party, under the influence of active female militants such as Louise Michel and feminists like Hubertine Auclert, pursued the emancipation not only of workers but also of women, the two social groups who had been suppressed by the bourgeoisie. To realize this final goal, the party requested women’s voting right in the Commune to admit women as real citizens in France and equal payment for equal labor for both men and women workers. Although the party’s demands could not be realized at that time, it helped the party members to broaden the understanding of the true nature of social oppression and human alienation.
