There are four strange letters which are carved on the stone. The stone is placed on the entrance of the Dancheon Valley which belongs to the HwagaeMyen(花開面), Hadong County(河東郡), Gyeong Nam Province (慶尙南道), South Korea. Until now, many people have studied on the meaning of those four letters. They have told that this stone and letters mean that Choi Chi-won(崔致遠; 857 ~ ? ), who was one of famous scholars at the end of Silla Dynasty, became a Taoist hermit(神仙) in this place. However, I cannot agree with this argument.
I interpreted these four carved letters using two kinds of means. First, I interpreted them on the basis of letters' shapes. Second, I interpreted them according to The Book of Changes' interpretation about Changes' Gho sign(蠱卦). The result was same. If I read these letters as three Chinese letters, these letters mean Choi Heng-Myeoung(崔興命). If I read them as seven Chinese letters, these become In Wang·Sun Wang Heng Cheon Myeoung (人王·仙王興天命). I decode these two kinds of interpretation as following meanings.
1) In the past, as Men's King(人王) and the master of Taoist hermit(仙王), Dan gun(檀君), who founded Korean people's first nation called ancient Zho Shen(古朝鮮), restored Heaven's order(天命).
2) Dan gun, who is going to be the Men's King(人王) and the master of Taoist hermit(仙王), will restore Heaven's Order(天命). Finally, the man on this stone represented his strong will that he could not help changing his period and doing the work for himself on the basis of the thought of Dan gun.
The meaning of carved letters is closely connected with the name of locations : Bak Dal Rae(박달내), Bak Dal(박달), and the top of Three Gods. These places mean Sun(仙) as the Korean people's ideal type. And these also indicate Sun Wang Dan(仙王壇), where Korean people practice their faith for Three Gods(三神) who live in the Heaven, Water, and Mountain. The person who carverd four letters here must be a believer in Dangun and Three gods.
I presume that the man who carved these letters is SuhSan HyuJung(西山 休靜 ; 1520~1604) who is a great monk in the middle of Yi Dynasty. I offered 8 reasons why I guess him as the man who carved these letters.
