The central aim of this study is to increase the competitiveness of the export enterprises through the rationalization of international physical distribution. This paper examines the problems of international physical distribution management by functions, and then finds solutions to those problems. Basically, International physical distribution activity is composed of five principal functions, namely, transportation, storage, package, loading, and information.
First, it is found that the export enterprises pay the transportation cost excessively. So, to solve this problem, it is necessary for the enterprise to reorganize the transportation structure and to cooperate with another enterprises.
Second, it is found that a lot of the export enterprises use the conventional warehouse and the capacity of warehouse is short. Therefore, the automatic and large warehouse should be increased.
Third, because a lot of enterprises don't use KS standard in packing the goods, the ratio of automation is low. So, enterprises have to promote KS standardization in packing the goods.
Fourth, it is found that because a lot of the export enterprises depend on the human resources In loading the goods, the breakage of goods is increased. So, the mechanization in loading the goods should be promoted.
Last, lots of enterprises don't utilize computer in managing the international physical distribution. Therefore, it is necessary for the enterprise to introduce the physical distribution information system and EDI network system.
The database used in this study resulted from a survey of Korean export enterprises. A test using a sample of 81 enterprises provides supporting evidence.
